Total Technology Policing

Challenge

The Met Police wanted to be the world’s most digital police force in order to make quicker and more effective decisions. To provide both frontline officers & back office colleagues, new tools and mobile devices, to protect the police force and the general public.

Our approach

We carried out UX Discovery & Research and UX functional prototyping (Alpha phase) of how data was being searched for and used by all police officers. We worked in close collaboration with enterprise and solution architects to help rationalise the data points and underlying architecture, which enabled us to understand how to present data in the most useful way.

We observed how back-office staff communicated to the police officer through their radios. We used real-life user scenarios from officers on patrol to traffic officers to air surveillance. Looking at their interactions and behaviours when they are receiving data via these devices, removing the need for an officer to ask a back-office colleagues to search a record on their behalf, providing a more data-rich, easily understood set of results.

Outcomes

Our prototyping and user testing catered for  and digitised force challenges including: security, lack of wi-fi connectivity, device robustness and use in low-light situations.

A singular search facility ‘MetSearch’ was an output of our Discovery & Research where all datapoint would accumulate into a single record. This record was available via mobile devices carried by all police officers and police units.

We have evidence that providing a single source of truth and producing a nominal data record enables the Met Police to make correct decisions immediately. The solution enabled the Met Police to make connections between person, objects, locations and events, providing officers with a quicker and more effective picture of the data.

Benefits

The Met Police were provided with a single source of data truth, which gave them the necessary data to deal with incidents and enquiries quicker and more effectively, reducing the potential for risks or events. We produced an efficient new way which reduced the time for frontline police inquiries by 75%.
