Global desktop portal implementation

Challenge

HSBC Global Asset Management needed to bring their global teams closer together by bridging the gap between teams using an integrated desktop application. A proof concept had to be created to gauge business, technical feasibility and end user sentiment. The business need was to build a personalised desktop solution, which staff used by default for internal department information, notifications, access to applications, and has the capability to integrate into the MS Office suite. Bringing a corporate social networking experience to users. Sharing information, managing their data as well as a means to subscribe to applications via this portal. Giving each user a personalised experience.

Our approach

We approached the proof-of-concept by gathering the key points of the business vision. Working closely with technology support, developers and internal compliance to validate the feasibility to create a solution which could be rolled out globally on all desktops. We ran questionnaires and interviews with end users in diverse teams in global locations to understand how they work on a daily basis. Understanding their most common needs, pain-points and what personalisation means to them.

The biggest challenge was to integrate social media technology into this desktop, as we had to consider the technical implementation as well as its usefulness to users. After a comprehensive discovery and research process we integrated this key functionality. We prototyped the application working closely with the development team, testing vigorously with all user types. Validating the technical feasibility that this could be implemented within the organisation.

Outcomes

A prototype was developed and was demonstrated to the Global Head of Asset Management. We highlighted the key business goals, feedback from our discovery and user research. Showcasing how we met user needs, enhanced collaboration between teams and how to personalise your experience using the application.

The efficacy of the tool exceeded business expectation as it was a concept which hadn’t been successfully implemented before within the organisation. We produced written epics and stories which framed the delivery of application based on the signed-off feature-set. The roll-out of this integrated desktop application was positively received across the organisation.

Benefits

Our collaboration with stakeholders, developers, compliance and users provided us with enough evidential data to successfully create a proof-of-concept which was fully funded to create the final product.

Sharing documents with the correct permissions in a central place, augmented with other collaboration and notification functionality which seamlessly worked with the OS and Microsoft Officer made end users workflow more efficient and user-friendly. The outcome was a tangible increase in collaboration and a one-stop-shop for everyday work functions.
